Ghana’s Pharmacy Council pushes telemedicine to bridge healthcare access gaps
The Pharmacy Council of Ghana is advancing telemedicine through the National Electronic Pharmacy Platform (NEPP), aiming to bridge healthcare access gaps, especially in underserved areas. Launched in July 2022, NEPP allows patients to upload prescriptions, compare medication prices across licensed pharmacies, and have medicines delivered to their homes, enhancing convenience and accessibility .
NEPP integrates with systems of the Food and Drugs Authority, National Health Insurance Authority, and Ghana Health Service to ensure quality and regulatory compliance . It also supports the National Health Insurance Authority’s Telehealth initiative, enabling remote consultations and prescription services .
Despite onboarding over 200 pharmacies and processing 154,000 prescriptions valued at approximately $1.2 million by January 2024, NEPP transactions constitute less than 1% of estimated pharmacy sales in Ghana . To address this, the Pharmacy Council plans to intensify public awareness campaigns and has mandated that all pharmacies enroll on NEPP by 2025 to maintain their licenses .
This digital transformation aims to make Ghana a model for e-pharmacy services in Africa, improving healthcare delivery and accessibility nationwide.
